Reporting for Duty – The Selective Service was made law in September of 1940 by President Roosevelt. The following month it was put into operation in Delaware. It was required of all men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-six to register, except for a few exempt. On the initial day of registration, October 16, 1940, a total of 35,215 persons registered throughout Delaware.
